KEEPING OUR PROMISE

— 2016

In 2016, the Beer Institute announced the Brewers’ Voluntary Disclosure Initiative. Under this program, beer industry leaders committed to providing nutritional information, freshness dating, ABV (alcohol by volume), and ingredients for their beer by the end of 2020.

— 2020

Today, more than 95% of all beer sold by participating companies reflects these disclosure standards. Consumers age 21 and older overwhelmingly agree with voluntary disclosures. Recent polling shows 75% of Americans believe alcohol beverages should have nutrition labels, and 72% say it encourages responsible consumptions.

Participating brewers and beer importers delivered on their commitment. Consumers now have critical information about the beer they choose.

No other alcohol segment can match the depth and breadth of label transparency these brewers and beer importers now provide.

WHAT INFORMATION IS PROVIDED?

Participating Beer Institute members voluntarily provide consumers more information about their products. Specifically:

  1. 1. Calorie, carbohydrate, protein, fat, and ABV (or ABW as required by state law) information on all labels in the form of a serving facts statement consistent with TTB’s voluntary guidelines.
    2. Ingredients on either the label or secondary packaging via a list of ingredients, a reference to a website with the information, or a QR code.
    3. A freshness date or date of production on all labels or primary containers.
    4. Restaurants can utilize these labels to comply with federal menu labeling requirements.

WHO IS PART OF THE BREWERS’ VOLUNTARY DISCLOSURE INITIATIVE?

Beer Institute member companies Anheuser-Busch, Molson Coors Beverage Company, Constellation Brands Beer Division, HEINEKEN USA, and FIFCO USA all participate in the Brewers’ Voluntary Disclosure Initiative.

The beer industry offers more information to consumers than any other alcohol category.
